Seh-Pandaar-Mazgaan or Persian Valentine
Ghazaleh Bozorgmanesh-Fard

In Ancient Iran or Persia, unlike many patriarchal cultures of the time, women have been honored and praised for their role of productivity and raising decent children. In Iranian Jalali calendar, the 29th day of the 11th month was dedicated to women and love. The day which falls on February 18th, is called Seh-Pandaar-Mazgaan, after Seh-Pandaar-Maz, the supporting angel of virtuous women, and keeper of the earth. The approximate coincidence of Seh-Pandaar-Mazgaan with its western version, Valentine, has been the centre of attention among Iranians especially in recent years due to increased attention to the history of homeland. Iranian People are trying to celebrate Seh-Pandaar-Mazgaan, the day of love and friendship, which has roots in their culture rather than an imported custom. Valentine is nevertheless respected and red heart cushions, pink teddy bears, roses, and chocolate boxes are exchanged some time between February 14th and 18th to celebrate love.
